EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Our truly unique museum tour explores mining, military history, renewable energy and the industrial heritage of Nottinghamshire, and our educational experiences can be specially constructed to focus on age appropriate curriculum-linked themes such as:

Mathematical.

Challenges can be introduced, for example: Calculation of lift cage speed given motor RPM and driven wheel diameter, or calculating the time it would take to travel 2 miles on the underground man rider train given the speed. More basic calculations can be introduced for younger students, such as comparing weights of aggregates with the weight of coal. This can be done with hands on equipment such as our small purpose built coal tubs on rails that are pulled by hand.

Science.

Apparatus on site offers students hands on experiences whilst they learn basic engineering principles such as fulcrum, block and pulley and class 1 and 2 levers. We have safe and tested equipment on site to provide a real life learning experience.

Military.

Students will be guided through our full collection of military vehicles, artillery and reference material, hands on experience can include sitting in the driving seat of a tank or taking a ride around our field in a Jeep.

Mining.

The tour can concentrate on the mining history of the site where 1 million tons of coal were extracted each year and 1300 men worked on a 3 shift rota. The machinery is still in-situ that operated 24/7.

Future energy.

Equipment on site is used to demonstrate how we now produce energy in the absence of coal, we have exercise bikes that produce energy, a hand powered washing machine, solar panels and wind generators in addition to walls full of reference material such as pictures of battery farms and solar farms. Our re-newables display includes battery chemistry such as solid stats batteries.

Class sizes.

We have with the capacity to deliver the same educational experience for a max of 60 pupils per day. This based on keeping groups to a maximum of 30 and running 2 groups per day to ensure that all pupils have a safe and highly engaging experience.
